RE: Bls: [MW:9168] Weld Repair

Dear Taufiq
                     Greetings !... Normally a base metal gets excessive heat in put, the metal's Mechanical properties like grain structure, toughness tensile strength, yield strength, elongation will be changed. if you are two or 3 times gave heat input the same location the metal's property will change and some time loses its quality... even you are did PWHT on the same metal at the same location... So, avoid this things after the 3rd time repaired, we will go to cut and reweld... But the chemical properties will not be change... This is my opinion...

Dear experts,

 

Here it is what I'm looking for. Too much heat input and longer time for PWHT will significantly reduce toughness and mechanical properties. Can you explain me in more detail? what is happen with chemical composition? Fyi, after verifying document, I found that several welds have been repaired until 3 times, and the system already put in service.

Note: mat'l spec: API 5L Gr B, process: SMAW, root pass: E6010, hot pass:E7018, design code: B31.4

 

I'm trying to get a good answer from experts.

Dear Taufiq,

Since there is not sufficient info provided, I can give you a general idea:-

Repair Welding Procedure often requires PWHT, Repeating weld repair would cause too much heat input and longer time for PWHT which would significantly reduce toughness and mechanical properties, also If you are qualifying wleding procedure in accordance with ASME sec ix make sure you fullfil the requirements of QW-407.2.
