If the joint size is 48” and repair is on 200mm only, still we need to cutout the joint or remove the entire weld for that portion ( 200 -300 mm) and re-weld.

Doing welding many time at the same location, the base matel mechnical properity well get change. To avoid the properity change, better to cut and reweld.
