RE: [MW:9450] buttering on weld edges

In addition to the two listed, there is one additional case where buttering may be performed.  Buttering may be performed to provide a buffer layer between incompatible materials or to enhance the weldability of a joint between dissimilar materials.  While I am sure there are numerous examples, one instance I have experienced is welding Monel K500 to carbon steel – the Monel K500 was buttered with Monel prior to making the weld to avoid weld metal and HAZ cracking.

Dear Mehta,

There are mainly 2 purposes to carry out buttering:-

(1) To compensate for poor joint preperation (wide root gap), material is added to both faces of joint.

(2) to avoid PWHT , not to sensitize material, for eg:- Stainless steel,

Dear Mehta

Buttering weld is procedure to rectify wide gaps(root openings) greater than those permitted by AWS D11 (normally found intubular joint in structural connection) and/or client specification, but notgreater than 19 mm or twice the thickness of the thinner part, whichever islesser. Procedure shall be qualified.
