Re: [MW:9471] ASTM A36 plates

Dear Moin!
Please see ASME 31.3 Chapter III  (Materials and specification) 323.1, 323.2, etc., has listed, Listed and unlisted materials.  Normally  A 36 will not meets A234 chemical, mechanical properties,If your project specification included A 36 material for fittings then you can use other wise you cannot use that SA 36 instead of SA 234

Dear Moin!
A36is carbon steel for general structural purposes and also A234 is wroyght carbon steel with Chromium (for forming stable matel carbides at the grain boundaries and the strong increase in corrosion resistances). Molybdenum (used in steels alloys for its high corrosion resistace and weldablity), Nickel (for instance, the austenite structure of iron is stabilized. This crystal structure makes such steels  less brittle at low temperatures) etc., these items are missing in A36. So your client statement is correct...

Thanks & Best regards

Dear Moin,

Yes, your client is correct, A36  is a commonly known as structural plate with poor grain structure and should not be used for pressure vessels,

Why not try SA516, there is not much cost difference.

Dear members,

Can a plate to ASTM A36 can be used to manufacture TEEs to A234 WPB, is there any restriction in BPV or B31.3 on the use of A36 plate for manufacturing A234 Tees.

One of client says A36 is for general purpose and cannot be used for making a pressure containing component to be used in oil and gas production . Is it correct, if yes why? And if not can you please provide me a technical justification, I could not find anything B31.3.

Thanks & Regards
