Dear Mehta,

If you want to weld Stainless Steel such as SS316 to P91 material, normally most of the codes would require PWHT (approx. 760 deg) of P91 material, however SS316 would get sensitised at this temperature, to avoid this you can use Nickel weld base metal (ERNiCr-3) on P91 and do PWHT, later use same ERNiCr-3 to weld between P91 and SS316 without any PWHT.

Buttering weld is procedure to rectify wide gaps(root openings) greater than those permitted by AWS D11 (normally found intubular joint in structural connection) and/or client specification, but notgreater than 19 mm or twice the thickness of the thinner part, whichever islesser. Procedure shall be qualified.
