Re: [MW:9510] Purging Gas for Fillet Weld

Dear ,

You need to provide purging if thk. of SS pipe is less than 6 mm thk. Heat input during fillet welding of support to SS pipe thk.< 6 mm, produces heat tints on ID of pipe, which leads to service failures deoending upon corrosivity of carrying fluid.

You can think. of reducing cost of purging by different means
. Above 6 mm SS pipe thk. it is not required.API 582 has got guidence notes.Pl refer.

Can anyone please clarify,  for Fillet weld to be carried out in a S.S Pipe (4.5mm wall thickness) to support joint with GTAW Process. Is it required to give Purging Gas in pipe.  (as per Clause 7.5 of API582. (attached)).

Pipe Material: SA312 TP316/316L
Support Material: SA240TP316/316L

Thickness: 4.5 mm Max.

Thanks in advance.
