[MW:17293] OVERLAY WELDING - SHRINKAGE PROBLEMS

Dear All ,

I would like to seek your advice with regard to the overlay welding of a pressure vessel of about 5’-0” in diameter and about 5/8” wall thickness

The wetted parts of the pressure vessel (PV) is about 3’-0” from the Circumferential weld seam to the bottom dished head.

We intend to put ER309L (2.4mm diameter - SAW Process) for the buffer followed two more layers of ER316L-16 (SAW Process)

We believe that there is a high possibility of distortion on the diameter after the overlay welding and we intend to tack weld at least ½” thick strong circular on the external diameter of the PV

We are thinking of putting three circular braces @ 12” spacing.

Please advise your thoughts on the above.

In addition, the bottom dished head of the same nominal wall thickness (5/8”) also needs to be overlay with the same welding process and again, we think there is a probability of distortion

We are thinking of putting a circular brace near the edge of the weld joint and nothing else.

Again,  please advise your thoughts on the above.

Thank you in Advance

Best Regards
