Hi Pradip,

Many thanks for all the info.  Agree 100% with you that one should not always stare at capital costs rather consider what the long term maintenance costs would be and always select the highest quality products especially for large projects but within the allowable budget.

Hi Gerlof,

Here're some foods for your thoughts. In tropical sea water environment  in North Africa, 304L would be highly unsuitable , 316L may last for some time (considering the facts that it contains 2.5% Mo to fight pitting corrosion). However Duplex and  Super Duplex or 6Mo alloys are long lasting and better engineered materials for such environments.

How does it matter with cost, e.g Duplex is more expensive than 316L? In a large project like power plant what percentage would involve  towards  cost of materials. Certainly build it right first time is a far better approach than "  let it fail and fix later".

The problem of power plant is that designers do not take corrosion as serious issue.  Whereas a materials and welding engineer in any oil and gas environments has to fight all the time.

The intent of my response is not educate others, but to emphasize  that  marine corrosion could be very aggressive and hence materials selection should be done accordingly.

Thanks.

Hi All,

SS316L is normally regarded as “marine gradeâ€‌ but it all depends on the water quality and temperatures the 316L is exposed to.  SS316L is only subject to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in the order and above 60 deg celcuis, which would result in crevice and pitting when exposed to warm water before even reaching the SCC phase.

Agree that super duplex is the better option but it all depends on the application that need to be investigated carefully and budget available as super duplex is double or more the cost of 316L.

Regards,

Gerlof.

Guys â€" Reading the mail trail and the responses:

SS 316L is unsuitable for an aggressive sea water application â€" Super Duplex is the option for undeaerated seawater and Duplex for Deaerated Seawater.

SS 316 L is used in marine environment and is better suited.

Dear sir,

it will be for power plant, especially for facilities in front of water sea.

Regards.

Where you want use these pipes?

Would it be for power plant application or for design and construction of any oil and gas plant ?

Please elaborate.

Thanks

Dear experts,

  Need your help.

Need to confirm if we can use austinitic stainless steel piping (A312 304L & 316L grades)  for maritime environnent and any risk of corrosion.

To code/standard i can refer ?

Regards.
